Trouble Paying Credit Card Debt?

Are you having trouble paying credit card debt? With all the new law changes and the credit card company changes, it would not be surprising if you are having trouble paying off credit cards at 29% interest.

In anticipation of the new Obama Credit Card Bill, the credit card companies have been lowering credit limits, canceling credit lines, and raising interest rates to obscene levels given that normal interest rates are still at historically low levels. After mass mailing credit card applications and encouraging massive use of those cards, the companies are now facing failure rates that are reaching epidemic levels.

People that have been able to make their payments and begin to reduce the balances on credit cards have now reached the point with the current economic conditions that they simply cannot carry the debt any further. As a result, delinquencies in card portfolios, despite what you read in the news, are at all-time highs.

The lenders are mandated by law to write off an unsecured loan balance after it has been delinquent for 180 days. That step does not mean that you no longer owe the debt, but the debt is worthless on the books of the lender.

One would think that if you notify the lender that you are having trouble paying, that they would work with you, attempt to lower the interest rate, and spread out the payments so that they made sure to get their principal repaid. On the contrary, it is actually necessary to go into default in order for the card company to seriously begin attempting to negotiate a settlement. We may be seeing some changes but there are number of companies that simply seem to have failed to see the logic in working with their customers.

It is possible for you to attempt negotiating credit card debt on your own. There are certain letters that you need to know to send to protect yourself from the tactics used by the collectors. You also need to have a way to insulate yourself from the calls and other contacts that are made by the collectors. Unfortunately, many people are not able to deal with the very sophisticated tactics used by collectors and can get drawn into providing account numbers and authority to draft payments when they had no intention of making another payment. Their feeling of guilt simply would not let them resist the collector — and the collector knew that.

If you feel you may have difficulty resisting, you may want to consider using the services of a professional credit card debt negotiator if you are having trouble paying credit card debt.
